SAP's Cloud Story Gets a Fresh Bull and a Familiar Skeptic Ahead of October 21

Two contrasting analyst notes landed on SAP this week, and together they frame the central question investors will carry into the company's third-quarter report on October 21: whether improving market sentiment is actually backed by the business, or merely riding a friendlier sector tide.

TD Cowen raised its price target on the stock from $205 to $250 while keeping a "Buy" rating, pointing to sustained momentum in cloud migrations as the reason. JPMorgan, by contrast, held its "Neutral" stance on Thursday. Analyst Toby Ogg acknowledged a brighter market picture than the one that preceded the second-quarter numbers, but said he still wants more clarity on the outlook for 2026 and 2027.

The split captures two different lenses on the same company. TD Cowen's case rests on customers moving into the cloud — a shift already under way. JPMorgan's caution centers on whether expectations have been sufficiently stress-tested against risk after the stock's rebound from its July low. Investors, in Ogg's framing, are asking whether the recovery is protected on the downside.

Product News Is Not Revenue

SAP has spent the past few weeks building out its artificial-intelligence lineup. At SAP Connect on October 6, the company unveiled Joule Work, Joule Assistants and the SAP Business AI Platform, all folded into its push toward what it calls the "autonomous enterprise." Joule Work has begun rolling out to customers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

The company has since added SAP Enterprise Financial Consolidation along with further Joule Assistants aimed at finance, governance and compliance workflows, extending the tools it offers for handling financial data and the processes around it. SAP Pay and the additional finance offerings have been announced but not yet introduced — a distinction that matters, since an announcement is not a rollout and neither is a booked sale.

SAP also plans to acquire Belgian AI firm TechWolf, a move meant to broaden its AI-driven workforce planning software. Reuters reports the deal is expected to close before the end of the year. It remains a planned expansion, not a completed one.

None of these announcements, on their own, translates into a quantified contribution to revenue. That gap between product news and financial results is precisely what the October 21 report is expected to address.

Cloud Growth and Migration Risk, Side by Side

BMO Capital weighed in on October 8, flagging cloud growth and more constructive feedback on Joule — while also noting the risk of delays in cloud migrations. The two observations sit together rather than cancel each other out: enthusiasm for the AI offerings coexists with the possibility that implementations slip.

SAP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The broader tech backdrop offered little in the way of a company-specific catalyst on Friday. Per Reuters, strong results from ASML, Aixtron and Ericsson lifted sentiment across the technology sector following the selloff in chip and AI-infrastructure names, though worries about AI-infrastructure financing and Chinese competition persisted. SAP shares gained 3.7% over the week, a move that fits the brighter mood without answering the harder question about its own business prospects.

That is the tension analysts keep circling: a friendlier industry environment is not the same thing as an improving company. The July rebound and the weekly advance speak to sentiment. The durability of cloud growth, the pace of migrations and the eventual revenue from the AI lineup speak to the business — and those are the numbers due on October 21.
