Bremen, Germany: As summer season rolls in, Traum-Ferienwohnungen, one of the leading online vacation rental platforms in Europe, has released interesting insights into the travel behaviour and preferences of German travellers. Based on the platform's booking and inquiry data, the report highlights key trends that will shape summer travel in 2024. In summer 2024, the states along the Baltic Sea and North Sea are garnering the highest interest from travellers. Among these, Lower Saxony stands out as the preferred destination for German tourists, thanks to its diverse geography, which includes both pristine beaches and quaint mountains. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein follow closely behind as popular choices for exploration this summer. Bavaria, renowned for its vibrant music and theatre scene as well as its rich cultural heritage, ranks fourth among Germans in summer 2024. Trailing behind, Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg are also capturing the attention of travellers, adding to the diverse tapestry of sought-after destinations within Germany. The Netherlands is emerging as the most popular international destination among German tourists, with Italy, Austria, Croatia, and Spain following suit. This contrasts with last summer when German tourists preferred Nordic countries over Southern European ones. Despite a slowdown in travel across Europe, German travelers exhibited confidence this year about their summer plans, with the majority planning their trips well in advance. Most guests planned their journeys 4-6 months ahead of time. Germans are also planning longer breaks this summer compared to the past couple of years when shorter breaks were gaining popularity. The average length of stay has increased to 9 days, up from 6 days last year. Traditional holiday homes are the most preferred accommodation this summer, chosen by 55% of travelers, followed by apartments at 23% and chalets at 11%. In terms of amenities, swimming pools emerged as the top must-have for German tourists, followed by dishwashers, terraces, and balconies. Commenting on summer travel trends, Gautam Swaroop, CEO – OYO Vacation Homes (parent entity of Traum-Ferienwohnungen) said, “This year's summer travel trends paint a promising picture for the German tourism industry. We're seeing strong demand, particularly for traditional holiday homes along the Baltic Sea coast. This, coupled with longer planned trips, suggests a desire for domestic getaways that will undoubtedly benefit local economies. We're optimistic that this trend will continue throughout the peak season, contributing to a revitalized German tourism landscape.” About Traum- Ferienwohnungen: Established in 2001, Traum-Ferienwohnungen is an online vacation rental platform with 100,000 vacation homes in its portfolio.
